Bruce Dickey’s Bio: Hi, let me introduce myself
My name is Bruce Dickey, I live in Kennewick, WA. I am 64 years young, married to Cathy and going on 38 years, 2 thirty something yrs old daughters both married and have successful careers.
Being empty nesters and retired and living in town has allowed me to spend more time with my dogs, walking, running, training, assisting others with training, Field trialing, Hunt testing, Hunting, and Judging AKC Performance events, Long time member, and past officers of “The Three Rivers Bird Dog Club”, being the event Secretary, or the event chairman for Club events, etc., – attending Seminars from pro trainers etc., basically anything to keep me plugged in with dogs, and their lives.
After my last Labrador Retriever died, Cathy and I started looking at the pointing breeds, we settled on the Vizsla.
“Cooper” was his name, a little red ball of lovable fur. With a little help from a couple of guys in a local Dog club (Three Rivers Bird Dog Club), I was on my way to train my first Hungarian Pointer. When Cooper was about 13 months old, he was at about the Senior Hunter Level. Shortly after he turned 14 months he developed a bladder infection and died from the anti-biotics he was prescribed.
The breeder we got Cooper from, had another litter, in which we got our 2nd Red Dog, “Gunnar” he went on to become our first AKC Master Hunter. In 2007 he placed 2nd in the Endurance Classic NSTRA Championship, in addition, he was a 3rd place NW Regional Champion, 2 years consecutive, also had many placements.
Now that he was proven we bred him, and kept one of the females, “Annie” She also went on to get her AKC Master Hunter title.
Since 2011, when I became an approved AKC Hunt Test Judge, in which I have judged events including, Junior, Senior, and Master, Master Excellent levels, and judging all stakes in AKC field trials, with judging over 100+ Hunt Test events, all levels, and dozens of (walking and horseback) field trials, all stakes, one would think I would have seen just about every situation there is… but no-way!
“Every run is a little bit different I’ve seen good dogs do Great things, and bad things, and have seen mediocre dogs Awesome things. All-in-all that is what keeps me coming back for more.
Now fast forward, currently we have “Ruger” a 9-year-old GSP, that I have trained. He and I enjoy Field Trialing (horseback and walking) and successfully completing and have titled him in the Master Hunter level. In 2022 Ruger achieved is Field Championship, and his Amateur Field Championship, to add to his previous Confirmation (show) title. So officially he is known as: DC AFC Coldwater’s Ultimate Outlaw MH “Ruger” all without sending him to a professional Trainer I will include a picture of Ruger with this email.
About 2 years ago we studded Ruger with a wonderful Foxglove Kennel bitch named Ronnie, I evaluated (Volhard Puppy Aptitude Tests) the whole litter and kept one of the males, whom we have named Remington call name “Remmy”. At 1 ½ years old I finished him in the show ring and got his conformation Championship. In the Field Trialing game, he won his debut derby run at 13 months old, since then I have been training him to “Wing and Shot” and I am just about done “proofing” him in all of the elements of “Wing and Shot”. I put him through the “Force Break for Retrieve” which he did very well. He just turned 2 yrs last month. My plan is to have him complete his Master Hunter Title after he has his field championships.
I really enjoy all elements dog training, helping people train their dogs, handling, scouting and watching these dogs do what they were bred to do, HUNT!
I look forward to meeting all of you when I come to visit in August.
Thank you for this Judging opportunity.
Sincerely, Bruce Dickey
